My name is Maria Copetas. My mother grew up during the Depression. Her mother was first generation from Asia Minor, Greece, but that territory is now part of Turkey. My grandmother's dream was for her children, three girls, to grow up and have families.
My mother's dream was always to be an artist. She used to draw constantly, and got a partial scholarship for art school after high school - in fashion design. Unfortunately, she couldn't afford to pay the remainder of the tuition, so she never attended - she went to work for Westinghouse instead. She never lost her love for art, she drew, watercolored, painted in various media, and taught me a love for art, color, texture, and music.
I will never be the artist my mother is. She is 87 years old and still draws for and with my daughter. But I can aspire to love art and color and all involved with it as she does.
I will follow her dream.
